My blogmate makes a valid point while missing the point. There’s no question that the conditions in the 1960′s for civil rights, women’s rights, human rights, privacy, censorship, and Big Brother were vastly inferior to those found today. The Civil Rights Act didn’t take effect until 1965 and Roe v. Wade didn’t make a woman’s body her own until 1973. The things that you can say on TV in 2012 would have made the censors in 1960 burst an aneurysm. Playboy magazine was still considered the height of debauchery. Miranda rights were anything but routine, and in places like Chicago and New York, confessions often came courtesy of a rubber hose. In some places in the South, blacks still had separate bathrooms and drinking fountains, and politicians thought that “nigra” was far enough from the n-word to appear in stump speeches.

But you know what we had in the late 1960′s that we don’t have now? We had hope. We had glimmerings that things were going to improve, that people were going to change for the better. We actually believed that racism was on the decline and tolerance was on the ascendent. We thought that science and sense would trump mindless adherence to ancient dogma. We could see some light at the end of the tunnel. Show me that light now. Tell me how guys like Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are creating hope for a kinder gentler future…rather than a return to the 1950′s that they seem to see as the ideal…barefoot and pregnant and chained to the stove, start your school day with the Lord’s Prayer, and the darkies and wetbacks will know their place. That’s their audacity of hope.

Giants are good, no question. Eli Manning is better than his brother in the clutch against good teams. Giant front four is damn good. Wide Receivers are awfully good, underrated. Special teams are good too. I see them scoring points on the Patriots, altho the question is will they be touchdowns or field goals.

Pats – no one knows how good their defense is. D backs are shaky but Wolfork is playing really well onthe line. I think they will give up points but may bend and not break.

Brady – do not be fooled. This is definitely the biggest game of his career. No question. What is the talk about Brady? Is he is as good as Montana? Montana would win this game.

IF Brady wins, you can legit say he is right with Montana , no question. If he loses, the rap will always be Eli owns him (unless he wins another one or two after this but you can never ocunt on that)

AS good as the Giants have been, they have been lucky. Couple of calls went their way- the Bradshaw no fumble. If Williams doesn’t muff two punts they lose to the Niners. the Packers didn’t play well, but a couple of plays go different and the Packers don’t make six or eight drops, they win. The Giants are counting on winning close. that’s part of their MO -they might but that means they have to make a lot fo stops or get a lot of turnovers.

I think Brady and Belichek will be prepared for the Giant defense with that short passing attack. I personally don’t believe the Giants have the personnel to defend it. Those tight ends, Welker, and Whitehead are going to catch a lot of balls on short drops that will neutralize the Giant front four. Finely was wide open all afternooon against the Giants, he just dropped passes . Brady is mobile, Rodgers and smith both hurt the Giants with that, altho Smith can’t throw on the run. Brady can. Unless Gronkowski is really hurt, I see Brady putting up big numbers and lots of points. I’ll admit Brady didn’t look great last week, but that was against one of the two best defenses in football (along with the Niners) and he still laid 23 points on them outdoors.

Barring turnovers the Giants will have to score at least four tuchdowns. they can do it. But I think the probablity is they won’t score enough to match Brady.

Of all the scenarios- I like the Pats by more than a touchdown. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Giants win but Belichek is planning stuff. Jerk but knows what he is doing.

Do the math. I root for Brady.

For a long time, things seemed to be improving in this country. Beginning back in those hippy days of the 1960′s, it looked as if we were gradually easing into the Age of Aquarius. On issues like civil rights, human rights, gay rights, privacy, honest sexuality, freedom of and from religion, and public education, we seemed to be entering a new enlightenment, a time of tolerance, openness, and understanding. Now it’s all turned to shit. Really. I’ve gone from encouraged to frightened. Maybe it was 9/11 or maybe it was just some ingrained human opposition to change, but everywhere you turn right now, you find the darkness of ignorance and bigotry and mindless fear encroaching on any inroads of the light.

This is plain and simple the Left version of the “good old days”. And it’s nonsense. I was around back then, too. There is no question, zero, zip, nada, that this is a far far more open-minded country on just about every issue than it was in the 1960′s, 1970′s, 1980′s, 1990′s or teen years ago. Not even close to the 1960′s. Google the name Bull Connor, he was just starting to make news then. Or James Meredith. Stonewall didn’t happen until 1969. Cesar Chavez was fighting for stuff in the 1970′s. Miranda rights. Things aren’t perfect today, doubt they will ever be (a big difference between the Right and the Left) but in terms of tolerance, maybe not other stuff but tolerance, trust me you’d rather live in 2012 than 1962. Not even close.

BTW -that picture of Miley Cyrus bellows doesn’t get made public in 1962, 1972, 1982 or 1992 -I’m not sure of 2002. But then again progress doesn’t always run in a straight line.

There was just no time for the weekly celebrity wrap-up yesterday, and today’s day late dollar short version has but one entry. I don’t even have time to review whatever it was that Demi Moore was smoking that sent her into convulsions, except to say what would have been wrong with your standard reliable nontoxic joint? But I digress. The Culture and Media Institute, a conservative group that acts as a watchdog and critic of the sort of folks and activities that I regularly review in this column, has…umm…a bone to pick with Miley Cyrus for setting a bad example for teenage girls. Here’s Miley celebrating her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth’s, birthday:

According to Krauthammer:

In the speech, he . . . said “I’m for an all-out, all-in, all of the above energy policy.”

You know, I thought I was cynical before Obama, but he is turning me into a Diogenes. This guy is saying all of the above.

Here is the guy who just two weeks ago vetoed Keystone, which is a sort of a slam dunk. There is no possible reasonable objection to it other than his political needs.

There is the guy whose EPA has essentially shut down drilling in the Gulf to the point where a judge in Mississippi had to reprimand the administration for not obeying his orders on releasing that [restraint].

We’ve got oil in Alaska and we’re doing nothing about that.

In coal, the EPA is shutting down mine after mine with regulations that the mines can’t meet, which is not going to do anything to help the global warming. The Chinese are building a coal plant a week. We are exporting our coal jobs and mines to China.

So when he says I’m for all of the above and he obviously is not, I think it’s incredibly disingenuous, but he says it with a straight face.

Editor’s Note: The following has been signed by the 16 scientists listed at the end of the article:

A candidate for public office in any contemporary democracy may have to consider what, if anything, to do about “global warming.” Candidates should understand that the oft-repeated claim that nearly all scientists demand that something dramatic be done to stop global warming is not true. In fact, a large and growing number of distinguished scientists and engineers do not agree that drastic actions on global warming are needed.

In September, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ivar Giaever, a supporter of President Obama in the last election, publicly resigned from the American Physical Society (APS) with a letter that begins: “I did not renew [my membership] because I cannot live with the [APS policy] statement: ‘The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring. If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.’ In the APS it is OK to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is incontrovertible?”

In spite of a multidecade international campaign to enforce the message that increasing amounts of the “pollutant” carbon dioxide will destroy civilization, large numbers of scientists, many very prominent, share the opinions of Dr. Giaever. And the number of scientific “heretics” is growing with each passing year. The reason is a collection of stubborn scientific facts.

Perhaps the most inconvenient fact is the lack of global warming for well over 10 years now. This is known to the warming establishment, as one can see from the 2009 “Climategate” email of climate scientist Kevin Trenberth: “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.” But the warming is only missing if one believes computer models where so-called feedbacks involving water vapor and clouds greatly amplify the small effect of CO2.

The lack of warming for more than a decade—indeed, the smaller-than-predicted warming over the 22 years since the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) began issuing projections—suggests that computer models have greatly exaggerated how much warming additional CO2 can cause. Faced with this embarrassment, those promoting alarm have shifted their drumbeat from warming to weather extremes, to enable anything unusual that happens in our chaotic climate to be ascribed to CO2.

The fact is that CO2 is not a pollutant. CO2 is a colorless and odorless gas, exhaled at high concentrations by each of us, and a key component of the biosphere’s life cycle. Plants do so much better with more CO2 that greenhouse operators often increase the CO2 concentrations by factors of three or four to get better growth. This is no surprise since plants and animals evolved when CO2 concentrations were about 10 times larger than they are today. Better plant varieties, chemical fertilizers and agricultural management contributed to the great increase in agricultural yields of the past century, but part of the increase almost certainly came from additional CO2 in the atmosphere.

Although the number of publicly dissenting scientists is growing, many young scientists furtively say that while they also have serious doubts about the global-warming message, they are afraid to speak up for fear of not being promoted—or worse. They have good reason to worry. In 2003, Dr. Chris de Freitas, the editor of the journal Climate Research, dared to publish a peer-reviewed article with the politically incorrect (but factually correct) conclusion that the recent warming is not unusual in the context of climate changes over the past thousand years. The international warming establishment quickly mounted a determined campaign to have Dr. de Freitas removed from his editorial job and fired from his university position. Fortunately, Dr. de Freitas was able to keep his university job.

This is not the way science is supposed to work, but we have seen it before—for example, in the frightening period when Trofim Lysenko hijacked biology in the Soviet Union. Soviet biologists who revealed that they believed in genes, which Lysenko maintained were a bourgeois fiction, were fired from their jobs. Many were sent to the gulag and some were condemned to death.

Why is there so much passion about global warming, and why has the issue become so vexing that the American Physical Society, from which Dr. Giaever resigned a few months ago, refused the seemingly reasonable request by many of its members to remove the word “incontrovertible” from its description of a scientific issue? There are several reasons, but a good place to start is the old question “cui bono?” Or the modern update, “Follow the money.”

Alarmism over climate is of great benefit to many, providing government funding for academic research and a reason for government bureaucracies to grow. Alarmism also offers an excuse for governments to raise taxes, taxpayer-funded subsidies for businesses that understand how to work the political system, and a lure for big donations to charitable foundations promising to save the planet. Lysenko and his team lived very well, and they fiercely defended their dogma and the privileges it brought them.

Speaking for many scientists and engineers who have looked carefully and independently at the science of climate, we have a message to any candidate for public office: There is no compelling scientific argument for drastic action to “decarbonize” the world’s economy. Even if one accepts the inflated climate forecasts of the IPCC, aggressive greenhouse-gas control policies are not justified economically.

A recent study of a wide variety of policy options by Yale economist William Nordhaus showed that nearly the highest benefit-to-cost ratio is achieved for a policy that allows 50 more years of economic growth unimpeded by greenhouse gas controls. This would be especially beneficial to the less-developed parts of the world that would like to share some of the same advantages of material well-being, health and life expectancy that the fully developed parts of the world enjoy now. Many other policy responses would have a negative return on investment. And it is likely that more CO2 and the modest warming that may come with it will be an overall benefit to the planet.

If elected officials feel compelled to “do something” about climate, we recommend supporting the excellent scientists who are increasing our understanding of climate with well-designed instruments on satellites, in the oceans and on land, and in the analysis of observational data. The better we understand climate, the better we can cope with its ever-changing nature, which has complicated human life throughout history. However, much of the huge private and government investment in climate is badly in need of critical review.

Every candidate should support rational measures to protect and improve our environment, but it makes no sense at all to back expensive programs that divert resources from real needs and are based on alarming but untenable claims of “incontrovertible” evidence.
