Debt June 30, 2011

Krauthammer on:
He himself, as we just heard, said you can’t reduce the deficit to the levels we need without raising revenues. Then he talks about the [tax break for] corporate jets, which he mentioned not once but six times.
I did the math on this. If you collect the corporate jet tax every year for the next 5,000 years, you will cover one year of the debt that Obama has run up. One year.
To put it another way, if you started collecting that tax at the time of John the Baptist and you collected it every year — first in shekels and now in dollars — you wouldn’t be halfwayto covering one year of the amount of debt that Obama has run up.
As for the other one, he mentions again and again, the oil depreciation tax break — if you collect that one for 700 years, you won’t cover a year of Obama deficits.
And then here’s my favorite. I worked it out in the car on the way here. If you collect the corporate jets and the oil tax together — get all the bad guys and the fat cats at once — and you collect it for 100 years, it covers the amount of debt Obama added… in February!
And he pretends that he’s the serious adult at the table.

Don’t worry.
The signals coming from the mercury fillings in my teeth indicate these are friendly aliens.
But there are some black helicopters forming over my house so I have to go now.

A group of UFO’s was spotted over London last Friday. They are definitely UFO’s…since they are clearly flying objects and they are as yet unidentified. The inclination of our more skeptical readers and, I suspect, my blogmate, will be to write off this incident as a hoax, a natural phenomenon, or a manmade terrestrial event. The hoax explanation is tough to swallow since the objects were filmed by at least two separate individuals in different parts of London, and the objects appear to be identical. A natural phenomenon isn’t out of the question, but if these are giant high-speed fireflies who are visible in bright blue skies, I’ll be interested in seeing the first specimens in Scientific American. More feasible would be some sort of advanced terrestrial craft. If the Brits have some kind of disc-shaped craft that can move this fast and shift directions in turns that must be on the order of 10-20 G’s, then they ought to be doing more to help win the war in Afghanistan. On the other hand, if in the more believable case that these are alien spacecraft, I have my usual question: What’s the point of teasing us with these brief spectacular airshows? Why not land on the south lawn of the White House and have a decent man-to-monster talk? “Klaatu barada nikto” and all that.

But my blogmate is a year younger than me, so he gets up a little earlier. June 30, 1953 and 1954…days that will live in infamy. Happy freaking birthday, blogmate! Tipping a chilled mug of Metamucil in honor of us both.

Bachman v. Obama June 30, 2011

I hope Michelle Bachman is not the candidate
When Stephanopoulos pointed out that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were slave owners, she countered with John Quincy Adams (??), the legendary abolitionist (not really). When Stephanopoulos pointed out that John Quincy Adams, while a president, was not a “Founding Father”, she replied, “Yeah, but he was an old guy who was around during, you know, historical times” (ok, I just made that up, but I’m paraphrasing).
Bachmann says she can’t wait to meet Barrack Obama in a televised debate. And I can’t wait to see it.
but on this issue maybe she can ask Obama about that Medal of Honor he gave out to the soldier who died in 2006.

VDH on NRO:
Barack Obama is trying his hand at uninformed populist demagoguing again, this time evoking private jet travel, which must come at the expense of “kids.” This is the sort of us/them rhetoric we have come to expect, soon no doubt to be followed by heartfelt plea for “civility.”
But one thing seems unclear: How does an attack on private jet travel square with his present efforts to wow Wall Street fat cats and the junkets to Vail, Martha’s Vineyard, and Costa del Sol? Or for that matter with the once tax-exempt Kerry yacht, the private-jet networking of green capitalist Al Gore, and Nancy Pelosi’s government-paid-for jet flights back to the Bay Area?
And when he associates a $250,000 income — about $125,000 net after federal, state, payroll, and local taxes in most of blue-state America — with the class capable of private jet-owning, we are once again back to tuning up 21st-century cars and inflating tires in lieu of drilling for oil. There is an art to populist demagoguery of the sort that Huey Long and even Ralph Nader used to excel at, but it falls flat — like millionaire John Edwards’s “two Americas” populism — when Ivy League–educated, mansion-living politicos try it without requisite preparation and study.
