Senator Joe Lieberman, an independent Democrat travelling with Sen McCain in the Middle East, told CNN: “The fact is that now is the time for action not just statements. The sanctions will have some effect on people in the top positions in the Libyan government and will lead them to think twice, but tangible support is needed.”
The senators noted how the American government had sent only a passenger ferry to evacuate US citizens, whereas the British had sent a warship and two Hercules aircraft over the weekend.
The Obama administration’s explanation that it had taken a quieter approach with Libya until US citizens had been evacuated had only limited credence, they said.
“I understand the security and safety of American citizens is our highest priority, but it is not our only priority,” said Sen McCain. “The British prime minister and French president were not hesitant and they have citizens in the country.” He added that on his visit it was clear that “people are looking to America for leadership, for assistance, for moral support”.
Dana Perino, a former White House press secretary, said: “The people of Libya have not head strong enough American support this week.”
